On a steaming Saturday evening, BNSF train Q-LACCHI zips around the curve in the small town of Melvern, Kansas, about thirty miles northeast of Emporia. The train had an absolutely terrible run from its origin point in California, as it dealt with crew shortages, intense opposing traffic, maintenance of way, and troublesome engines. My wait for this train was extended from 20 minutes to an hour and a half, as the train made a stop at Emporia to set out one of its trailing locomotives. As the sun continued to set and the air became thicker and thicker due to an approaching thunderstorm, the train finally came by me with CSXs Seaboard System heritage unit as the second of three rear DPUs. This was the first time a CSX heritage unit had visited the Emporia Sub.
